INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN

Lesson Summary:

In this lesson you’ll learn how to design the permaculture farm infrastructure. Specifically, where to put your main access roads, the best locations for your house, and how make main subdivisions of your property with fencing…

You start with the main access roads and preferably position them on the ridges and contours, by water channels and streams, and in valleys and alongside boundary lines. Then you position your house, the best location is midway up a gentle slope, if that location is available. Finally fencing follows all of the other infrastructure layouts, following roads, water lines, boundaries, etc.

As you gradually unfold the infrastructure design, we’ll know exactly where to fit the remaining systems of the property.

Action Steps:

STEP 1. Download the step-by-step guide on how to design your farm’s infrastructure. (Est. time required: 5 min.)

STEP 2. Design your main farm roads, locate the ideal spot for your house, subdivide your property with fencing. (Est. time required: 1 h.)

  • Use Google Earth to make your sketches, lines, drawings, and calculations if necessary…
  • Refer to the case study Google Earth .kmz file for an example of infrastructure design.

STEP 3. Proceed to the next video lesson: Land Use Design
